Sacrifice sleep, and a whole world opens for you.
Weekend after weekend, I rose by three in the morning to arrive in San Francisco for first light. On those days I'd be done with the work of framing beauty and tragedy by eleven, when I'd scuttle inside to bathe my retinas in darkness, feed my stomach, knead my shoulders, and look for a bathroom where I could wash the city from my hands and face.
Look for me in Borders Books off Union Square. I'm the guy in the green sweatshirt eating a piece of carrot cake in the cafe, or browsing the photography section on the third floor. I'll be there. Routine favors young children and obsessive-compulsives.
