Favorite Photographs: March 2003

I've started getting up at ungodly hours in order to make it into the city for first light. San Francisco is an entirely different city when you arrive at dawn. It presents an almost introverted and peaceful face, but it awakens into something so different.
This past Saturday, getting out of the car, I could feel a touch of humidity in the air. It enters your nose, and in comes the smell of San Francisco - all its money and strange sufferings, mixed with bodily odors and car exhaust; a whiff from a passing woman who's freshly-applied scent intoxicates and frustrates.
The light, struggling against humidity, becomes slightly milky. This light is something that you cannot explain in words, and these poor photographs rarely do justice despite my efforts to reveal it.
